Be a Part of Sport Events

We organize trips to local sport events including marathons, half-marathons, and other foot or cycling races. Take part in a mass-participation athletic event on another continent—or simply enjoy the experience and support your favorite runner or cyclist as a spectator or volunteer and became a part of local community for a day!

We abide to the philosophy that it does not matter how much of the world you have seen but rather how much of it you have experienced. Add Slovenia to your bucket list and allow us to let you experience it!

Individual Tours “Create your Own Vacation”

We organize different kinds of outdoor activity tours which include hiking, biking, skiing – as well as resting and enjoying yourselves! You may join us and explore Slovenian regions on foot and by bike.

Lavish hotels do not belong into the countryside and the mountains so we will stay in agritourism-type accommodations and even mountain huts. Tours will be led by local guides who know their way around local sights, culture and food; they are eager to provide you with an authentic experience of life in the Slovenian countryside. Mateja Travel partners with local providers and is committed to sustainable and responsible tourism.

The Full Tour: Back to Nature!

Hiking

Did you know that Slovenia is an Alpine country? Indeed, the eastern-most part of the mountain range perhaps most typically associated with Switzerland reaches into this country. Perhaps most famous part of the Slovenian Alps are the Julian Alps, named after Julius Caesar who founded Cividale del Friuli, a town at the foot of the mountains. The peaks and mountain passes in Slovenia are lower compared to the Western Alps, and the range itself is broader and less arched.

The itinerary of our trip and the elevation we will go to depend on your skills, wishes, stamina, and the time of your visit; in the mountains, safety is paramount. We will spend two nights in mountain cottages, leaving below us our daily obsessions to be closer to the stars, and enjoy traditional breakfasts nested between the land and the sky.

Special tours to higher peaks (e.g., to Triglav which, at 2864 meters/ 9396 feet is the highest peak in the Julian Alps) can be arranged for individuals or small groups. And, in case you were wondering: Yes, Lake Bled lies in the Julian Alps, and of course a tour of the Alps cannot go by without visiting this iconic lake!

Slovenians like to say they live on the sunny side of the Alps. Come see for yourself!

Biking

How does a bike ride in unspoiled nature sound? Perhaps coupled with delicious homemade food and surrounded by astounding views? Allow our professional tour guides to take you on a biking trip to the rolling hills of Goričko, part of the Pannonian Plain region in the northeastern part of Slovenia. The breathtaking nature, fresh air, gorgeous views, and delicious food and wine are little known even among many Slovenians! Then, if you would like to trade in a bike ride for a round of golf, the Moravske Toplice spa resort is within close distance.

Another possible biking destination is the Slovenian Carinthia, where you can bike or kayak into a cave! A path was created through the abandoned mining tunnels under Mount Peca, an old lead and zinc mine. After fastening our helmets and checking our flashlights, we will start a journey connecting two valleys through an underground trail over five kilometers/three miles in length. Talk about a memorable trip and unique holiday pictures and selfies!

Lounging

The last three days of our trip will be spent on the Slovenian seaside. We will visit Piran, a magnificent medieval town formerly part of the Republic of Venice. Its narrow streets, old buildings, and rich cultural heritage will make you feel as if you travelled into the past. To honor our promise of leisure and rest following days in the mountains and on the cycling paths, we will take you to the Lepa Vida Thallasso Spa, the only outdoor spa center in Europe located in the magical Sečovlje Saltwarks Landscape Park.

About Us

The idea for Mateja Travel was born after fate – and love – took Mateja to the United States. At that time, she realized how beautiful and comfortable her home country was; everything is close by: high mountains, the sea, excellent food, good wine, and nice people. She wants to share all this with her guests and help them create an experience they will want to share with friends.
The life she lived in Slovenia allowed her to develop a broad social network which includes some of the country’s best mountain, skiing and cave guides. Moreover, she offers her guests exquisite experiences: visits to hidden spots, and opportunities to visit long-standing recreational and sports events, where you can participate as a runner or volunteer, in this slowly-awakening European gem.

Our mission is to introduce travelers to Slovenia, its popular sights, as well as its more pristine spots. We want to provide our guests with the opportunity to fill their lungs with fresh air, enjoy cool fresh water, enjoy peace and quiet, and experience Slovenian culture up close.

And provide crowd-loving travelers an opportunity to experience interesting sports and recreational events, as well as meet locals.

Meet your guides!

Mateja (pron. MAH-tay- yah) is the owner Mateja Travel. She graduated from the University of Ljubljana in Slovenia with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education and Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Kinesiology. After working for 10 years in the City Office for Sport in Ljubljana, the Slovenian capital, she joined the national sports watchdog at the Ministry of Education, Science and Sport. These experiences allowed her to work with people of all ages and walks of life: From children to students and adults, from university professors to elementary school teachers and principals.

While traveling around Slovenia, Mateja had the opportunity to visit countless splendid yet little-know places, sample delicious food and meet unique people. After moving to the United States to follow her spouse, a university professor at Washington State University, she decided to start Mateja Travel and dedicate herself to organizing active holidays and showing the most beautiful places Slovenia has to offer to American travelers. Certificate of Completition ASTA

In her free time, Mateja enjoys biking, hiking, running, swimming, skiing, walking, and playing tennis. Throughout school, college, graduate education, and then her professional career, sport has been such an important part of Mateja’s personal and professional lives that she decided to incorporate physical activity into her holiday packages.

Few mountain guides are more experienced – or more entertaining – than Škof (pron. Sch-kh-OFF). This former member of police’s special unit and later chief of police’s elite athletes unit loves nature, mountains, and everything outdoors.

Škof, or “The Bishop” (his real name is Franc Rožman) is a certified instructor of alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, and Nordic walking. He has guided mountain trips and ski tours with participants ranging from Average Joes to ambassadors and heads of state.

His mountaineering efforts include conquering the peak of Mont Blanc (Europe’s highest peak, 4,808m/15,777 ft) multiple times and from multiple route, as well as conquering over twenty other European 4,000-meters summits (13,123 ft). He also reached the summits of Huascarán Sur (6,768m/22,205 ft) in Peru, climbed to the altitude of 7,700 m (25,200 ft) on Cho Oyu (the sixth highest mountain in the world), and skied off the top of Mt. Elbrus in Russia (5,642m/18,510 ft).

He has climbed in the Yosemite and Rocky Mountain National Parks in the United States, as well as taken part in several editions of the Haute Route (one of the most prestigious six day ski touring traverse in the world – http://www.chamonix.net/english/winter-activities/ski-touring/routes/haute-route), ran a number of road and mountain marathon races, and completed Rajalta Rajalle–hiihto (http://rajaltarajallehiihto.ranua.fi/In-english/RR-info), a border-to-border cross-country ski tour near the Arctic Circle in Finland, covering 440 kilometers (273 miles) in seven days.
